The Wagmatcook Elders Housing Project emerged from their Comprehensive Community Plan Update. The community was involved in all phases of the project; from scoping and programming, through site selection, conceptualization and design development. This project re-invents appropriate housing for this First Nation community. The architectural design allows the community to fully participate in building it while using local resources. The project evolved to have major community benefits beyond simply providing housing for Elders, through the community construction process, capacity building and training, opportunities for new businesses/industry, and developing a new innovative financial model to reduce dependency and meet their housing needs in the community. This approach to architectural design helps the community to be more self reliant. This project reinterprets what this community's housing looks like moving forward.
