The free lab is an exciting opportunity for students to explore the form, topology, materiality, and mechanical function of a musical instrument within an ensemble setting. Through the use of table-top models, rapid prototyping, photogrammetry, and 2D and 3D modeling, students gain an interdisciplinary and nuanced understanding of sound and acoustics. In collaboration with the Dalhousie Wind Ensemble and The School of Architecture, students were invited to workshop and build their ideas and designs. The results were showcased in an exhibition in November 2021. This project provides students with a unique opportunity to develop their skills and gain experience in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting.
