Kahkewistahaw Community Market

Kahkewistahaw First Nation

Building off of Kahkewistahaw First Nation Comprehensive Plan, community members re-imagined and reused an abandoned community resource (shower stalls purchased for the Powwow grounds, but never used) to create something needed in the community, a Community Market. The project taught participants that what may appear to be a lack of resources could instead be an opportunity to move forward using local labour, skills and materials, rather than looking outside the community to make a project possible. This project also served to train local people, share knowledge, showcase talents and build new skills. The Community Market is a place where people come together to buy and sell local arts, crafts, baked goods, fruits and vegetables. It creates a lively space that can both accommodate regular market events, and also encourages and support community gatherings.
