The Granville Mall in Downtown Halifax is a beautiful street with cobblestone and Italian Renaissance architecture. However, the area is often empty, impacting local businesses, especially during COVID-19 recovery. To provide more reasons for people to visit, the Granville seating project was initiated. The seating consists of two larger-than-life forms: The Floating Seating and The Bloom. The Floating Seating is a playscape with three soft woven petals that can accommodate a variety of users. The Bloom is a blooming flower that can be seen from a far distance drawing people in. By integrating light into the structure, the seating comes alive at night and brings magic to the site, even during colder months. The Playful Blooming Seating aims to bring life to the area and respond to the community's desire for something vibrant, fun, and artful in Granville Mall. Collaborating with NSCAD students, the OSO created opportunities for student exhibitions and events for the Granville Mall. The Granville Mall offers great potential for diverse programs and events, facilitated and supported by this project's planning and design.
